Alaska Caribou Buster Hunts with Alaska Hunting Safaris are conducted in August, September, and October. Our seven-day wilderness hunts originate from Iliamna, Alaska, about 240 miles southwest of Anchorage. Hunters should plan to arrive in Anchorage and hotel for one night, before heading on to Iliamna the next day. We'll meet our hunters in Iliamna and fly them into our caribou base camp.

Daily commercial air service from Anchorage to Iliamna is available with Era Aviation.

Alaska Hunting Safaris will make your reservations from Iliamna to our hunting camps via local air taxi services. Air Taxi fees from Iliamna to our hunting camp, (approximately $450.00,) will vary somewhat depending on the location of the caribou herds. This fee does not apply to our "Caribou Buster" package.

Field Conditions

Hunt Methods
This is a highly mobile hunt using our private aircraft to pursue the caribou herds. From spike camps in the field we'll glass and stalk the herds, selecting only the most magnificent trophy bulls.

Due to recent high populations in these herds, Alaska regulations have increased the caribou bag limit to two bulls per hunter. This is an incredible opportunity to score on massive bull caribou... twice!

During the 2001 season we had a 100% success ratio on very high-quality trophy caribou bulls. All hunters that chose to take two bull caribou were successful.

Camps
Our camps are warm, clean, and comfortable tents. Since we hunt in a wilderness setting, modern amenities are limited. All food, lodging, and transportation during the hunt are provided.

We base from one well-stocked main camp and branch out into smaller spike camps.

These spike camps are located in the vicinity of herds located during aerial survey. Actual hunting is on foot. We spend most of the hunt hiking and glassing terrain for trophy bulls.

Weather
Temperatures are variable from 20°F to 60°F degrees, with wind and rain predominating. Alaskan weather is unpredictable, and although it is fair during this season, hunters are advised to be prepared. Good raingear and warm, layered clothing is a must.

Other Hunt Activities

Wing Shooting
This is an action-packed hunt with an emphasis on Caribou, however, abundant ptarmigan can provide excellent wing sport after the caribou tags are filled. Bird hunters are welcome to bring a box or two of 12 ga. #6's for use in our camp shotgun.

Fishing
Caribou are the main focus of this hunt and clients should be aware that fishing is incidental and available only when our camps are close to water. Since our caribou spike camps are mobile and follow the herds, fishing is excellent when we find ourselves near a major drainage. Clients can fish for up to seven species, depending on the hunt date. Rainbow, Dolly Varden, Silver Salmon, Northern Pike, Grayling, Sheefish, and Lake Trout inhabit the lakes and streams of this region.
